Installing TalkByText Mobile Edition

This page explains in general terms how to download and install TalkByText Mobile Edition on your mobile handset.

Each phone has its own different way of working. For the Nokia 9300, we provide a complete illustrated guide at Installing TalkByText on the Nokia 9300

For other handsets, here is some more general guidance.

We recommend that you download the free TalkByText Mobile Edition program direct to your mobile handset. Open your handset's web browser and visit http://ictrnid.org.uk/mt.html.

If asked, allow your browser to connect to the Internet. The webpage will guide you to select and download a version of the program installer suited to your type of handset.

After the download completes, some handsets will automatically offer to install the program for you. Otherwise, move to the folder in which you downloaded the installer and then run the installer. The program is still under development so it has not been expensively digitally signed and you should continue the installation, provided you downloaded it from this website.

It is helpful to make a note of where the installer puts the TalkByText Mobile program or its shortcut, so that you can easily start it afterwards.

Each time you start the TalkByText Mobile Edition program, your phone will probably ask for your permission to connect to the Internet. It is not advisable to maintain a permanent connection to the Internet as that would likely be expensive and would also run down your battery quickly.

However when making several calls, multiple prompting for permission can become irritating. To counter this behaviour, you may be able to set your phone so that it only prompts you once each session when you start the program. You may also be able to set the phone to always use the correct full Internet settings without prompting. To set up these features, refer to the manual that came with your handset.

The very first time you run the TalkByText Mobile Edition program, it will try to register your handset with the RNID text gateway. You will be asked to allow the program to send an SMS text message to the gateway and you must leave the programme running till you receive the reply. You will usually receive a validating reply quite quickly, so please do not close the program for a few minutes. Provided you do not move your SIM into a different handset, this registration is normally only necessary once.
