Director of New Technologies calls for eGovernment services to be fully accessible

24 November 2004

At a seminar organised by e-government Bulletin, supported by BunburyIS, Guido Gybels, Director of New Technologies at RNID, gave a rallying speech about eGovernment services and their impact on society from an accessibility and usability point of view. Mr Gybels pointed out that progress in technology could be both an opportunity and a threat and that it is crucial that designers and implementers take the needs of all users, regardless of their abilities and preferences, into account. The speech discussed the social and economic aspects of eGovernment and framed recent developments in their historic context. It also argued that well-designed eGovernment sites could contribute to inclusion as well as to other key policies. In addition, well designed, accessible services benefit all users, at an overall reduced cost. The full text of the speech can be found here.
