I already have a Nokia 9210 handset but don't have the textphone software on it. How can I get the software installed on the phone?

You can take your Nokia 9210(i) mobile handset along to a Vodafone store and they will be able to install the software onto the handset for you. The software is not available online and will not be given directly to phone users by either RNID or Vodafone for them to install. People must specifically ask for the RNID Mobile Textphone upgrade offer.

Is the 9210(i) mobile textphone software compatible with any other mobile handsets?

No it is not. The Mobile textphone software was specifically designed for the Nokia 9210 and 9210(i) handsets only. The newest generation of mobile textphones, TalkByText Mobile Edition, does work on several models and brands of handsets. See TalkByText Mobile Edition for more information.

Are the latest Nokia communicator handsets (the 9300 and 9500) available as mobile textphones?

They are not compatible with the previous 9210(i) mobile textphone software. However, TalkByText Mobile Edition does work on the 9300 and 9500.

I have a Nokia 9210i with RNID textphone software from Vodafone. I would like hearing people to be able to call me, what number should I give them?

When you are using a 9210 or 9210i with the RNID Textphone software, your phone will have two different phone numbers. The main number is a voice number, which can also be used for sending and receiving SMS messages. Your textphone software uses another number however, known as the data number. You should give other people this data number for making calls to your mobile textphone. Textphone users can use the BT TextDirect 18001 prefix to call this data number and hearing people can use the 18002 prefix. For example, if your data number is 077 1111 2222, then hearing people can call you on 18002 077 1111 2222.

You should have been allocated both numbers when you bought your Communicator from Vodafone, but if you do not know your data number, or have lost it, get in touch with the Vodafone Customer Care team. You can email them at disability.access@vodafone.com or ring them on 18001 33222.

I read the answer above about the data number. However, even though people call the data number as described, I still don't seem to receive the calls. Can you help?

In order to receive textphone calls on your Nokia Communicator, the RNID textphone software must be running, otherwise it cannot detect and answer the incoming call. As you can still use all the other functions and applications, running the textphone software should pose no problem.

Also, if you wish to receive calls on the Nokia Communicator, you might want to purchase a separate flashing or vibrating alert, as the phone itself does not offer this. These typically come in the form of flashing pens or vibrating belt clips.

These accessories are not ideal as they can pick up phone calls from other phone users around you, but unfortunately Nokia has never made a vibrating alert for the Communicator. RNID continues to campaign for fully accessible phones and has raised the alerting problem for Communicator users several times with Nokia. The newer generation of mobile textphones, TalkByText Mobile Edition, does run on different handsets, some of which offer built-in vibration.
